Marie Muller: First Goal in Portland

Marie Muller came to Portland from SC Freiburg in 2024 and did something rare for a European import in her first NWSL season: she played almost every minute of every match. 27 starts in 32 appearances. 2,447 minutes. That's not a transition year. That's a player who walked into a new league on a new continent and immediately became indispensable. She won the UEFA U-17 Championship with Germany in 2016. She got her first senior call-up for Germany in February 2025. And on April 29, 2026, she scored her first NWSL career goal in a 2-0 home win over San Diego Wave, opening the scoring at Providence Park in the 10th minute off an Olivia Moultrie assist.

Freiburg to the NWSL

SC Freiburg in the Frauen-Bundesliga is a development club. It's where young German players go to get minutes and learn the professional game. Muller did her time there, and the Thorns acquired her in 2024. The transition from Germany to the NWSL trips up a lot of players. The physicality is different. The pace is different. First NWSL Goal: April 29 vs San Diego Wave

Twelve career NWSL appearances into year two, the goal finally came. Providence Park, 10th minute, against San Diego Wave. Moultrie collected the ball in midfield, slid it through to Muller making a run, and Muller finished. 1-0 Thorns. Her first career NWSL goal. The Thorns added a second through Sophia Wilson in the 64th and won 2-0. Portland moved to 5-1-1, 16 points, first in the NWSL. The German defender's first goal in the league came in the match that put Portland on top of the table.
